Welcome to Year Five!

Year 5 has had a great start to the year. Here’s a summary of what we have got up to:

In writing, we have read the story, Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick and learnt how to use dialogue to convey character and advance action. We have previously taught punctuation and grammar, including speech punctuation, fronted adverbials, and conjunctions.

So far in reading lessons, we have revised the different reading skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction and retrieval. We have learnt the best techniques on how to best answer questions which involve using these skills.

In maths, we have learnt the key methods for the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have also looked at whole number and decimal place value.

In science, we have practically studied evaporation, dissolving and the states of matter.

In history, we have seen how the power of the monarchy has gradually shifted over the past 1,000 years from absolute to constitutional. For Black History Month, we learnt how the campaigning and work of black figures has shaped our British Values.

In other subjects, such as DT, we have been busy designing, creating and evaluating stuffed toys. This required great patience and skills from all involved. In PE, we have been lucky enough to have Sports Stars deliver our basketball sessions. Mr Heath has taught our computing sessions in which we have looked at online safety and begun work on databases.
