Last term Year 5 explored the concept of Status in drama and how power can influence a character’s attitude and posture. Status shifts are important to recognise in writing and we analysed and performed a script which highlighted the changing nature of relationships and interaction. They were extremely successful in realising the aim and highlighting status shifts within the piece. This knowledge will support their understanding of all the work we do for the rest of the year.
Year 4 studied playscripts looking at the features and structure of a script in relation to other genres of writing. They were then able to identify elements such as stage directions, specific dialogue and scene structure. We also learnt about characterisation and how to approach the delivery of lines from the page considering both physical and vocal expression. This culminated in duologue performances to showcase their understanding and the work was extremely effective.
Year 3 embarked on the initial drama programme ‘Basic Skills – Finding your Voice’ which equips them with all the fundamentals of drama as a solid foundation for the work they will go on to explore. This includes learning about still images, improvisation, vocal expression. use of space, physical theatre and much more. The children all embraced the lessons with a positive mind-set and their confidence is growing week on week.
This term Year 6 will be exploring evacuees in order to support their WW2 topic in the classroom. Year 5 will be doing a theatre in education project aimed at year 1. Year 4 will be using drama skills to further their understanding of The Iron Man and year 3 will continue learning the key skills required to access a drama curriculum.
