Arunside are proudly working towards the West Sussex Learning and Behaviour Advisory Team (LBAT) ‘Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Inclusive Practice Award’ which is also known as DADIPA.
As we look to extend and enrich our provision for learners with a Dyslexic or Dyscalculic profile, we are providing parents with some information to support understanding and provide support for children at home.
Supporting Children with a Dyslexic Profile
It is estimated that around one in ten people may be Dyslexic! Arunside are not able to officially diagnose children with Dyslexia, instead this must come from an Educational Psychologist or a qualified assessor. We can use a combination of online screeners, teacher judgement, parent and pupil voice to gauge whether or not a child may have a Dyslexic profile. From this, we are able to provide suitable support and learning strategies to ensure children showing Dyslexic traits are able to reach their full potential.
- The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity provides specialist support, advice and information to people with Dyslexia and parents, teachers and employers: https://helenarkell.org.uk/
- The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) offers advice and support for parents for both Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, including a free downloadable guide for parents once signed up to their free website: https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/advice/children
Supporting Children with a Dyscalculic Profile
It is estimated that around 6% of the population may have some sort of Dyscalculic difficulty. Without the support of an Educational Psychologist or specialist assessor, Arunside are unable to diagnose Dyscalculia however we can use checklists and our knowledge of a child to understand whether a child may be experiencing these difficulties. Appropriate support can then be put in place to best support children with a Dyscalculic profile.
Further advice and support for parents can be found on The Dyscalculia Network website: https://dyscalculianetwork.com/dyscalculia-for-parents/ . This community interest company is passionate about supporting individuals with Dyscalculia.
